our story

“It was shortly after my baby sister started kindergarten that my mother began making soap in our kitchen. At first it was just a hobby - with molds, mixers, and cutters all made by my dad. But it soon took hold of my mother and, before too long, of all of us. When her workspace expanded from the kitchen to include the garage and closets of my childhood home it was clear that my mother’s passion for making soap had become more than about the product. It had become about the ingredients. Just as we do today, my mother insisted on using only the highest quality blend of skin moisturizing ingredients to not only cleanse the skin but also improve its health and vitality – free of the chemicals, detergents, mineral oils, surfactants, and parabens that harm our bodies and our planet.

Soap for my family, was a craft – one that required inspiration and dedication. In 2000, my mother and I acted on these feelings and expanded her home business into a small retail store, where she continued to make each bar by hand and where I learned how to run our growing business. In a year’s time, we had outgrown our little shop and decided to move to our current location in downtown Melbourne.

We began to expand our recipes and our product line as customers confirmed our beliefs that people crave naturally derived health and beauty products that they can trust on their skin and for their families. Our name grew as the results came in – people simply loved what our products could do for their skin.

Soap was now a pivotal part of my life, as well, and when demand began to grow faster than mom could supply, my husband Corey became an apprentice – learning from my mother with the same tools how to make the same fabulous soaps and bath products.

Today, Corey and I are thrilled to be continuing what my mother started so many years ago in our kitchen. We now have three retail stores where we sell a wonderful selection of bath products, as well as the many varieties of bar soap that Corey continues to make by hand. We are very proud of all of our products - each of which is still created by us with health and wellbeing in mind.

As the next generation of our family comes along and Corey and I have the opportunity to teach our children our passion, I’m constantly reminded of my mother’s belief that what is good for our bodies is and should always be good for the earth. That is why our products are and will always be made by hand, in small batches, using only renewable resources with ingredients that are beneficial to your skin and safe for your family.”

Did your mom ever give you an oatmeal bath when you had chicken pox or poison ivy? The same soothing quality can restore and calm skin at any time. That’s why it’s a popular ingredient in so many natural products. It’s also a great exfoliator, providing a gentle but effective scrub that removes layers of dirt and dead skin.

Olive Oil
It’s been prized for centuries for its benefits on the body both inside and out, and research now backs up olive oil’s upstanding reputation. It’s full of polyphenols, antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and vitamin E. It naturally decreases the signs of aging while restoring skin’s vitality and promoting an even, bright complexion. If you have skin conditions, olive oil might be for you; it’s been shown to soothe problems like eczema and psoriasis. It also makes for a particularly long-lasting bar, which is always a benefit in a slow economy!

Palm Oil
Did you know there are several different kinds of vitamin E? They’re called toctrienols, and they’re hard to find gathered together in one place, but palm oil is full of them! Toctrienols are even more effective than the common form of vitamin E at fighting aging and penetrating to the deepest layers of skin. They’re also free radical fighters, and are even known to defend against cancer.

Palma Christi Oil
This oil has so many healing properties it’s known as Palma Christi, or “the hand of Christ,” but you may also know it as castor oil. Natural ricinoleic acids fight microorganisms, which means that this oil helps heal acne as it restores cell damage and evens out complexion. It has the unique ability to penetrate skin more deeply than almost any other oil, and fights free radicals on all fronts. It’s often used in alternative healing applications.

Rice Bran Oil
Are you a “rice bran beauty?” Generations of women in Japan and other Asian countries have earned that title after using rice bran to lighten and smooth their complexions (that would be the effect of the naturally occurring oryzanol). It also puts off signs of aging, which never hurts, and when exposed to sunlight becomes a UV barrier. A luxuriously rich, moisturizing oil full of several kinds of B and E vitamins, rice bran oils gives your skin a complex treat.

Rosehips Oil
Research is starting to show what folk healers have long known—that rosehip oil can replenish moisture and put off premature aging. It’s high in vitamin C, which boosts cellular immunity, and by soaking into the skin’s lipid barrier, it even boosts cellular regeneration.

Shea Butter
Shea butter is a rich, creamy fat derived from the nut of the African shea tree. Over half of its weight is comprised of essential fatty acids, like omega-6 and omega-9, and it is a natural source of retinol, which is widely used to restore skin’s elasticity and reduce signs of aging. You’ll find retinol in many conventional cosmetics and wrinkle reducers (often alongside unwanted chemicals). Shea butter absorbs easily into the skin without leaving a greasy, oily feeling. It’s so health-promoting that in Africa it’s consumed as food. We like to think all this is why the shea tree’s French name, “karite,” translates as “life.”

Soy Wax
Soy wax comes from soybeans. It has a much cleaner burn than paraffin and other waxes derived from petroleum, so when you light up a soy candle, you get very little black smoke or soot. It also burns longer and more evenly than other waxes. Since soybeans are a natural renewable resource, soy wax is eco-friendly and biodegradable. And if you happen to spill a little? Clean up with warm, soapy water—much simpler than with paraffin.

Stearic Acid
Stearic acid is found in shea butter and cocoa butter. It’s got a lot of uses, acting as an emulsifier (to bind substances like oil and water together), a lubricant and a hardening agent.

Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet almond oil is a favorite with massage therapists for the way it restores and revitalizes thirsty, stressed out skin. (If you ask us, it lends a “spa therapy” quality to our products!) It’s extremely rich in vitamins, including E, A, B6, B1 and B2. People with skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and even sunburn can benefit from this oil’s soothing, anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also been effective when it comes to smoothing out skin tone and reducing dark spots. However, it is derived from nuts, so if you have nut allergies you might want to look at our products that don’t contain sweet almond oil.

Vitamin A
Pores are designed to flush out toxins and dead skin cells, but sometimes they need a little help. Vitamin A to the rescue! It’s ideal for acne sufferers, as well as those with chronic issues like psoriasis and eczema. As though that weren’t enough to earn it a place in our products, vitamin A evens out complexion, reduces signs of scarring, and fights aging with active retinoids.

Vitamin D
Vitamin D is naturally produced by your body as a positive, healthy reaction to sunlight, but most of us don’t get enough of it these days. Its benefits don’t stop there, either. It boosts immunity, enhances the absorption of other vitamins, promotes healthy sleeping patterns, fights free radicals and cancerous cells, and inspires an all over optimism that will leave you feeling as good as your skin.

Vitamin E
Vitamin E is quintessential for skincare! This little vitamin reduces signs of age and wrinkles, lightens dark spots and smoothes complexion, restores cell damage, reduces the appearance of scars and infuses moisture into skin. It’s perfect for chronic conditions and irritations. Sounds like a thorough spa treatment for skin, right? We think so, too.

100% Pure Jojoba Oil
Jojoba is one of nature’s compounds that comes closest to resembling the skin’s natural oils. It’s full of antioxidants and balances skin’s pH, so it’s great for acne sufferers. It can even be applied to dry, damaged hair to restore moisture, or be used as a natural make-up remover. This one is a favorite among customers and staff alike who prefer their products pure, unscented and as simple as they come.

100% Pure Shea Butter
Why do we include shea butter in so many of our ingredients, from our soaps to our bath fizzies and beyond? Because shea butter is one of nature’s finest, richest moisturizers, full of vitamins and antioxidants your skin loves—like omega essential fatty acids. It can even reduce fine lines and wrinkles with naturally present retinol. It makes a perfect base for most of our product line, but we love it all by itself just as much. This is as pure as it gets!

Aloe Vera
Aloe is one of the oldest skincare and health promoting substances in the world. Alexander the Great coveted it, the Romans loved it and so do we! It soothes irritation in conditions from sunburn to psoriasis, restores elasticity, reduces inflammation and fights acne by warding off infection. Packed with vitamins (A, C, E, B2, B6 and B12, to name a few) and minerals (calcium, magnesium, iron and more), it heals damaged DNA and protects from future damage. While your skin soaks in all this goodness, you’ll feel soothed and moisturized.

Avocado Oil
Avocados are so good for the skin, you can even slice one open and apply the soft, creamy pulp for a quick, DIY facial. Your skin will know exactly what to do with it! Avocado oil is full of antioxidants that fight free radicals, vitamins (like vitamin E) and fatty acids. It’s also rich in sterolins, which enhance immune system performance. Skin cells are restored, complexion is evened out, and you’re protected from UV damage.

Baking Soda
Baking soda has so many uses, we couldn’t list them all here! Let’s stick to its skincare benefits, which include gentle exfoliation, and calming dry, irritated spots (ever use it to take the pain out of a sting or bite?) Combine it with citric acid and a pleasing, skin-soothing fizz that fills the tub.

Beeswax is a great multitasker. It softens your skin, creates a barrier to seal in moisture, and makes sure pores can still breathe. This sets it in a class above petroleum derivatives like mineral oils or paraffin oils (the main component of Vaseline), which clog pores. We love the way beeswax creates rich, luxurious products that never feel oily or greasy. Research is also starting to note some antibacterial qualities, too—we can’t say we’re surprised!

Calendula Extract
Calendula is gentle enough to use on the thinnest, most delicate skin—even right around the eyes—and strong enough to destroy microorganisms. Naturally anti-inflammatory, it’s excellent for the treatment of rashes and chronic skin conditions. We bet you’ll love that bright glow your skin has after using it, too.

Caprillic / Capric Triglyceride
This triglyceride comes from coconut oil. It’s an emollient that aids in the skin’s absorption of vitamins and nutrients, and also provides a smooth, gliding lubrication for skincare products.

Citric Acid
If you read ingredient lists, you’ll notice citric acid in too many products to name! It’s naturally found in fruits, and is so popular because of its vitamin C content. This means it fights free radicals and stimulates your immune system, making for healthy skin from the outside in. Put it together with baking soda, and you get a fizz that makes our bath fizzies fun!

Cocoa Butter
Cocoa butter is rich in a variety of antioxidants which combat a variety of skin problems—from free radicals to wrinkles and even cell damage. It’s chock full (or should we say “chocolate full?”) of cocoa mass polyphenol, which slows T-cell activity in the immune system. This makes it perfect for people with overactive immune systems resulting in conditions like psoriasis. It infuses dry skin with luxurious, non-greasy moisture, and many people report that cocoa butter has played a key role in reducing their scars and stretch marks.

Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is one of our favorites, so beneficial and versatile it’s perfect for most of what we make. It naturally destroys bacteria and microorganisms. It’s also full of antioxidants that enhance your body’s first line of defense: your skin. As it heals skin’s outer layers, it penetrates deeply to fortify inner layers. Signs of aging are reduced as connecting tissues are strengthened and elasticity is restored. It even works as a make-up remover! We could go on forever about our love for coconut oil, but we’ll just let you find out how fantastic it is when you experience it in our products.

Corn Starch
We like thick, rich body products, which is why we use corn starch to give some of our stuff a wonderful, viscous quality. It’s all natural and is even used in many cooking recipes.

Dead Sea Salt
The Dead Sea contains a wider variety of salts than any other body of water on earth, and their therapeutic benefits have been mined since ancient times. The chemical salt balance includes magnesium (which slows aging), calcium (which stimulates circulation), potassium (which balances skin’s natural moisture content) and bromides (which ease sore and stiff muscles). All in all, it’s excellent for balancing skin’s metabolism—not to mention the gentle, thorough exfoliation as it rubs away layers of dead, tired cells.

Try putting some oil and water together in a jar and shaking it up. See how it becomes a blend of tiny bubbles? Keep watching, and you’ll see the water and oil naturally separating. A little emulsifier stops that process, allowing us to make products that are rich in both pure water and natural oils.

Glycerin, found in all our soaps, is naturally created during the saponification process. It’s humectant, which means it attracts moisture. This makes it ideal for softening and moisturizing skin without any chemicals. As traces of it linger on your skin, it can actually attract moisture from the air! It’s great for people with sensitive or problem skin, even those with eczema or psoriasis.

Green Tea Extract
Does a cup of green tea leave you feeling healthy and energized? Green tea can do the same thing for your skin. It’s like a shot of energy that restores elasticity and firmness. It’s also a famous fighter of free radicals, and is even said to destroy cancer cells with its high concentration of polyphenols. As if this weren’t enough to sell us on this little leaf, it also neutralizes UV light to protect against premature aging, and infuses new life into dying cells. Pour yourself another cup!

Jojoba Oil
There’s a reason we sell pure jojoba oil, and why we include it in so many of our products. It’s a natural compound that closely resembles the oils already produced by your skin. That’s how it balances skin’s pH. It’s great for body, face and even to shine up your hair.

Bar Soaps

Don’t Bug my Dog
I have a white Bull Terrier with horrible skin problems, she is constantly scratching herself. We have spent hundreds of dollars on allergy testing and injections for this and nothing has worked. When we returned home I bathed her with the soap and wow what a difference, she doesn't scratch or lick nearly as much! Her skin is so much better after using the soap. Finally we found something that actually works. Thank you so much, it has made such a difference in her skin and coat!

T.D., Port St Lucie, FL

Unscented Oats
I have been advised by my dermatologist in the past to use unscented products to keep a skin condition that I have in check, but even with using those products my skin never felt good. I use Nourish's Unscented Oats and Bare Shea Body Lotion every day, along with the body scrub weekly, and my skin has never felt better. Thanks for these great skin friendly products!

Tea Tree
I love the tee tree, and the citrus scented soaps, they smell so fresh. The great thing about your soap is there is no need to apply lotion to your skin after you shower; your skin feels soft and hydrated but not oily. I recommend it to everyone and have given the soaps as gifts and now they are hooked too!

Bar Soaps
Since moving to Florida I have had HORRIBLE eczema and problems with folliculitis. I've spent excessive amounts of money to see allergists and dermatologists without success. Finally, I just decided to treat the issue myself. I've been using your soap for about 2 years now. I no longer have any issues with folliculitis, and very rarely have problems with eczema. And to top off the good news, I LOVE the scents and the fact that I can use them on my sensitive skin. They're wonderful, and I'm so very grateful that I found you guys. Thanks again,

D. J., Melbourne, FL

Nourish Baby

Shampoo & Body Wash
Can I just tell you that, as cheesy as it sounds, using your baby wash on him makes me feel like a better mom.

Salt Scrubs

Ginger Lime
I have been using your wonderful soaps & scrubs for several years. Always take jars of the salt scrub to daughters & granddaughters when I visit------hum, wonder if I would be welcome without the scrub?!? Don’t think I will chance it!

Island Mango
I have had a skin condition called keratosis pilaris (little bumps on my arms) since I was a little girl. Nothing I have ever tried-- over-the-counter or prescription-- has ever made a difference. After I used the body scrub and soap, I got out of the shower, looked at my arms and I was overjoyed! For the first time ever, my arms looked better: less rough, less dry, less red. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Your products make a difference in my life every single day!

E. F., Connersville, IN

Vanilla Raspberry
Your Sea Salt Scrubs were the best I have ever use!. That is why I bought 4 to last me a long time!

Great Soap. We love how clean we feel (and refreshed) after using them. Look forward to stopping by every time we are in the area.

Keith and Brenda Y., Fredericksburg, VA

This is my way to pamper myself. Every shower is a mini-spa.

C Nelson, Melbourne Beach, FL

My skin tends to be dry and sensitive, especially living the Florida sun for so many years. I've been using Indian River soaps for about a year now and refuse to ever use store/major brands again. When I'm on my last bar, I make a "soap run" and stock up again. Indian River soaps are moisturizing without being greasy and the scents are delicious!

Tina B., Melbourne Beach, FL

Why do I love Indian River Soaps? The fragrance, the feel, the look, I'm hooked. It started with marquesas islands, and my husband and I can't get enough. Our shower is never without it. I've been buying the travel bundles lately and they're wonderful for so many reasons. The size, the surprise, and the price, is so nice. Oh and the soy candles are wonderful and neat, what a treat. I give them as gifts and tell everyone I know how wonderful your products are. See you real soon, 'cuz I always need more soap!

Cheryl M., Palm Bay, FL

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee for the length of time a bar lasts, for the depth of aroma of said bar and for the soothing of my soul when completing a shower with Hippie Chick!

This stuff is good! It lathers down to the very last morsel. It makes the entire bathroom smell great and the varieties are endless.

What is my favorite soap? Oh its Tropical Fruit Salad, no I mean Tropical Beach, no wait I think it is Cinnamon Peach, but then again, I really like Clove. Rosemary has been a good stand-by over the years, and we go back to the beginning of time, oh that would make us older than dirt, so maybe my favorite is Gardener's Scrub!

Well, I meant the beginning of Indian River Soap Company before we all needed Fountain of Youth to be our favorite. I'm using Hibiscus right now - that's my favorite. If I don't have the one I love, I love the one I have.

Isn't there a country song like that?

S. Arnold, Melbourne, FL

I love using the all natural Liquid Soap from Indian River Soap Company. As a result of years of sun-bathing, my skin was left dry and blemished. About two months ago I made the switch from anti-bacterial soap and now my skin is softer and smoother. I not only use it at the sink, but also in the shower daily. Try the Dead Sea Salt Body Buffers too, it makes for a great pedicure. The Island Mango is my favorite!

Janice, Melbourne, FL

I first stumbled upon your products when I visited St. Croix five years ago. I bought a bar of soap and was totally hooked. As my bar of soap got smaller I got sadder and sadder. What would I do? Imagine my relief when I was able to locate you on the web. I have used Rain Forest soap religiously since that time. There is something about it that keeps my skin feeling moisturized – unlike any soap I’ve ever used.
